Metallurgical Fire Synviljor is an amazing, aggressive, and intelligent listen throughout. I really wish I’d have picked this up sooner. Favorite track: Över blodiga vidder.

Matthew Arnold I really like the Avant-Garde take on black metal these guys employ with both Stilla and Bergraven. Excellent use of synths; cool combination of riffs and weirdness. Great stuff.

Kaz A great chapter in nordic wintry black metal (probably my favorite Stilla album so far). Reminds me of the classic stuff of Satyricon, Immortal and such. Especially good to listen when walking in cold winter landscapes! Favorite track: En närvaro av då.

Dave Aftandilian Snow-spirits whirl sparkling and deadly toward the lands of men, hungry for blood to warm their chill. Northern lights blaze angry green, sweeping the stain of our civilization from the Mother’s flesh with fire. For our greed, hubris, and rape of their forest homes we shall now suffer as we have made them to do.

H.L. Basically, STILLA plays Nordic black metal but not in an easy listening style. The songs are mainly long and the songwriting is following progressive ways. As an effect, the tracks does not really appear epic or catchy and most of them also take some time to impress the listener. Nevertheless they develop a characteristic nordic atmosphere over time. Check for example "Skogsbrand", maybe the most accessible tune on "Synviljor". A great piece of art for sophisticated black metal fans! Favorite track: Skogsbrand.

about

As the seasons converge and the wind blows in cold from the north, Stilla are restless once more – urged on by the powerful forces of nature to transform these earthly energies into a bittersweet maelstrom, bleak and yet strangely comforting for those awaiting news from Sweden. Exploring the outer limits of the human sensory condition and challenging the boundaries of experience, Stilla ask us to reach out and contact our primal nature and to get creative. Synviljor is similar in etymology to ‘synvillor’, which means ‘optical illusion’ in English. This little titbit may or may not be a coincidence, but without doubt it is, in a way, an appropriate analogy for the band’s oeuvre, wont as the album artwork for their albums are to draw you in to expecting a rather palatable form of Nordic, nature inspired black metal only for a more acerbic, biting attack on the senses. Synviljor epitomises this Loki-esque playful trick of the mind more than ever as the vitriol cuts deeper than ever before – perhaps a portent of the coldest, harshest winter to come.
